This is a prequel to the first two movies, taking place a few years before the haunting of the Lambert family. A young girl, Quinn, thinks she has a spirit bothering her and goes to Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) for help. But the psychic is having problems of her own. Her husband died the year before and she had tried contacting him-but brought back a malevolent presence that bothers her each time she tries to use her psychic abilities. We're introduced to Quinn's family-her father, Sean (Dermo Mulroney) and her younger brother, who she has to watch out for since their mother died. Quinn gets hit by a car and breaks her legs, so is bed ridden. This gives the ghost plenty of opportunities to terrorize her. Eventually Elise agrees to help her and we also find out how she met up with the two "Ghost Hunters" she works with.
This is a decent movie, not nearly as good as the first but far better than the second. And Lin Shaye is always entertaining to watch as the Elise character. Recommended.
