This may be one of the worst horror movies I've seen to date, featuring some fantastically horrendous overacting by Edward Furlong (TERMINATOR 2). Amber Benson (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) portrays his girlfriend, though there's no chemistry between the two actors whatsoever. The premise is that two couples are going to buy some high end marijuana in order to re-sell in the States and make a bundle of money. But in order to get it they have to cross over to the Mexican border through these underground tunnels. These tunnels are said to be inhabited by spirits, which are caught there. The goofy thing is, is that these tunnels are all lighted up with lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling and the characters don't need to use flashlights or even matches. My question is-why are these tunnels wired with electricity if no one ever uses these tunnels? And how are the lights being powered to begin with? Anyways, because of this all the scenes are lit pretty much the same way, except when they pop up into these boarded up safe-houses, where the sets look really cheap. The first to get it is Furlong's girlfriend, who is cut in half by a digital special effect. When we see her on the ground, eyes rolling back in her head, it looks like her legs are buried under the floor. The effect is totally unconvincing. The two survivors eventually run into Steve Railsback (BLUE MONKEY, THE STUNTMAN), who is this crazy old man who can control the spirits in the tunnels and make them do his bidding. In a flashback we see that one of the ghosts we see throughout the movie is actually his murdered son---and it was he who did the murdering. The dialogue is also poor, the characters unlikable and the special effects, particularly the computerized ghosts, are sub-par for a movie this is failingly trying to be. As for the direction-- it takes real talent to get such bad acting out of these otherwise decent actors. I cannot NOT recommend this movie more. What a stinker!Produced by THE ASYLUM.
