Sean Anderson is a rebellious teenager who doesn't like his mother's new husband, Hank (Dwayne Johnson). In the first scene he gets arrested on his motorcyle and is grounded. Then, he gets an encrypted message from his grandfather, Alexander (Michael Caine), who tells him he's discovered the hidden island that Jules Verne wrote about. Hank sees his stepson's enthusiasm--and wants a closer connection--so goes with him to a nearby tropical island, where they hire a helicopter pilot and his daughter, Kailiani, to take them there. Of course, Sean is interested in the girl.
The helicopter gets sucked into a storm that surrounds the place and they wake up on a rocky shore. They go into the interior and come across a herd of tiny elephants and a giant lizard. And finally meet up with Alexander, who lives in a Swiss Family Robinson-style treehouse. However, the island is beginning to sink--and it's going to happen in a matter of days, so they have to get off or die. Alexander tells them that the Nautilus, Captain Nemo's infamous ship, is parked on the other side of the island so that's where they go. They ride giant bees (a nod to the Ray Harryhausen MYSTERIOUS ISLAND movie), are pursued by giant birds, sees giant spiders and a volcano that spews gold. Eventually Sean and his stepfather make it aboard the submarine--but they need to recharge the ancient batteries. Coincidently there's a giant electric eel swimming nearby...
This sequel to JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH is as good as the first film. It's fast paced, action packed and humorous, with excellent special effects. Recommended.
