Hosted by Victor French, who would in the early 70's host the horror television show CIRCLE OF FEAR/GHOST STORY, this made-for-television movie consists of two tales. In the first, THE BUTTERFLY, an American businessman taking a ride out in the English Countryside in his newly purchased 1920's automobile comes upon a costume party at an old mansion. Everyone acts a bit peculiar and one of the young ladies, who is dressed in a butterfly costume, seems to know him, though she's never met him before. As the night goes on she becomes more and more friendly towards him-and he's ready to take her away from the party when she asks him to. But he must fill up his empty gas tank---and the party members direct him to a nearby gas pump. He finds the place but the place is ancient looking and locked up-and then it starts to rain. He holes up in his car until morning and goes looking for the mansion, unable to find it. He stops by a small cottage and asks directions to the place but they tell him that it's impossible that he went to a party there last night-because it burned down over forty-years before. It turns out that the car he recently purchased belonged to the fiance of the woman dressed in the Butterly costume. In the next story a woman is determined to make contact with her deceased husband and hires a detective to look out for her, to make sure that the psychics she goes to are real. One by one he reveals them as frauds. She also begins to fall in love with him and he encourages this. You see, it's all a plan of his to get all of her money-he set up most of the fake psychic visits to begin with. Just before things go too far, though, her dead husband pays her a visit and warns her of the deception. JOURNEY INTO MIDNIGHT reminded me of those Amicus anthologies, like TORTURE GARDEN or even the newer HAMMER HOUSE OF HORRORS. A good, creepy movie.
