During my adolescent infatuation with the slasher genre I managed to neglect ever seeing "Just Before Dawn" so, I decided to give it a watch recently. Unfortunately, I'm a bit more cynical toward this particular sub-genre now than I was as a young child - through my teens and this didn't show me anything that hasn't been done BETTER by other nostalgic slashers that still hold up for me.
Typical premise about a group of young friends who hike deep into the woods to camp and fall prey to a giant, inbred, machete wielding psychopath...
A lot of people seem to really like this one. Personally, I found it painfully tedious and weak. No gore, killer is barely seen, drawn out scenes that try to build suspense but fail, and lacking in the nudity department aside from the semi-SEMI-attractive redhead peeling her top off in one scene. I guess the atmosphere is okay like most people say. They found a nice waterfall that they show a lot and plenty of trees. BIG DEAL! Sorry guys - "Just Before Dawn" did nothing for me. Oh, and the way the killer gets taken down in the end is fucking stupid!
