To watch this you have to forget all the previous animated incarnations of THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, as this starts at the beginning and in the 1950's, after McCarthyism and during the Cold War. The characters, such as Superman and Batman, are in their old costumes and new characters, such as The Green Lantern and The Martian Manhunter, are introduced—and are vitally important to this story.
The villainous threat which unites all these heroes is "The Center", an ancient creature that takes the form of an island and spews forth all sorts of prehistoric creatures into battle. The Center wants to eliminate humanity, which it views as a threat to the planet.
The movie is much more violent and bloody than your usual superhero cartoon, which is surprising, though it's effective.
Based on the graphic novel by Darwyn Cooke
