The 4th film by Quentin Tarantino is his best. I can't believe it. The movie is basically a homage to those martial arts action flicks from the 70's, namely The Shaw Brothers, with Uma Thurman as a former assassin bent on revenge. You see, the group of assassins she belonged to thought they had killed her on her wedding night. She was even shot in the head by the leader, Bill (David Carradine)-and right before he shot her she revealed that the baby she was carrying was his. Four years later she wakes up from a coma, figures out what's going on-and then sets out to kill them all. She is one very focused woman.Uma Thurman is not one of my favorite actresses-hey, she kind of looks like a bug-but she's surprisingly well suited for an action movie. I didn't expect that.Like PULP FICTION the movie skips around in time quite a bit which succeeds in keeping you guessing what's going on.And as for action and gore-this is one of the goriest movies I've seen in a long time. The scene where she single-handedly kills over 80 assassins is seen to be believed. Just amazing. To get around the censorship bureau they turn this scene to black and white, bypassing all the spraying red blood. Then, when it's over it's color-and we see the aftermath of limbs akimbo and stumpy assassins moaning and trying to crawl away.I can't tell you the ending but it becomes very self-evident why this movie is labelled Vol 1. She only kills two of the five assassins here....
