As bodies pile up and cattle go missing around a Maine lake, Jack Wells (Bill Pullman) is forced to team up with office-dwelling Kelly Scott (Bridget Fonda) to investigate the mystery, and friction eventually gives way to friendship as the two pursue the beast. The local sheriff (Brendan Gleeson) wants the creature dead, but mythology expert Hector Cyr (Oliver Platt) hopes to capture and study it in director Steve Miner's campy monster movie. -netflix
This has to be one of my favorite killer creature flicks in recent history. The cast is chock-full of fan favorites... well... maybe more like chock-full of people you recognize from other work but can't remember their names. Ok, there are a few big names in there. Bill Pullman plays his part well and even the Fonda chick did pretty good. Never been a big fan of hers, but now that she has been in this and a Jet Li film... I have to give her props. My favorite cast member was Oliver Platt... who played his role as a quirky crock chaser to perfection. The dialogue in this film is great... lots of great humor and sarcasm thrown in, but none of it feels out of place. There is enough humor in here that some people try to brand this a comedy, but it is still a horror movie to me. While on the subject of the cast, we cannot forget about Betty White. I love seeing her in roles where she plays a sassy, foul-mouthed old bitty... and she was perfect for this role as she stole the show.
I have heard alot of scuttle about the effects in this one being cheesy in a b-movie kindof way. I have to disagree. I thought the effects were very well done. There were some suspense building, Jaws-like underwater moments where the creature was not seen... but when it is finally seen... I thought it was realistic. Well, as realistic as a gigantic Crocodile can be.
This is on my list of must see horror flicks for those of you who like the killer creature movies... and for anyone else looking for a great time. See it.
