This takes place in New Zealand, after the zombie outbreak kills 99% of mankind. In the opening title sequence a guy who looks like Ben Affleck, Morgan, walks through a deserted city. He goes back to where he lives with two other guys. One of them is reading on the couch. He proceeds to leave a phone message for a girl he had met, though she's probably long dead. Then, they decide to make a run to the nearby grocery store since they are out of canned food. They meet a few unimpressive zombies along the way. After this it's into a DVD store where they get an aerobics workout program. Between watching television and killing a construction worker zombie with a power saw, I guess the electricity still works. There are some funny bits, such as when they encounter a woman and her father. He has a cut and Morgan is ready to take him out, thinking that he was bitten by a zombie, but he wasn't bitten. While they are discussing this a zombie crawls in and bites him in the arm. So the woman joins the group. She a scientist and is on to a cure to the zombie plague. But she's not too concerned with contamination because in a scene where she's taking blood from a corpse she has it all over her face.
This movie has some of the lamest zombies I've ever seen in a horror film, basically people with some pale makeup and blood on their mouths. There is one that has prosthetics but it's lame and looks like a pig face. The CGI effects are great, such as all the head injuries. The one thing LAST OF THE LIVING has going for it is that it is funny and unpredictable.
