A group of idealistic, liberal graduate students kill a right-wing crazy redneck Zackary Cody (Bill Paxton) in their house after he threatens to kill one and rape another. But rather than call the police they decide to bury the body in their backyard garden. Then, they get the idea to begin killing others, everyone from gay-bashers to right-to-life activists. They do this by inviting them to dinner and then poisoning them with arsenic laced wine. Their dead body garden--and the tomatoes--begin to grow. The local town Sheriff (Nora Dunn) is trying to track down Cody because she believes he's responsible for kidnapping and killing a young girl. Her blood was found in his abandoned pick-up truck. When the sheriff gets too close to uncovering the truth, one of the friends kills her and buries her in the garden. Everything comes to a head when two of them run into politician Norman Arbuthnot (Ron Perlman) and they invite him back home for dinner.
This dark comedy is a very entertaining movie, though it mostly takes place in one room. The graduate students are portrayed by Cameron Diaz, Ron Eldard (SUPER 8) and Annabeth Gish (X-FILES), among others, and there are cameos by Charles Durning, Mark Harmon and Jason Alexander. Recommended.
