In the present (2006) DCI Sam Tyler (John Simm) is hit by a car and then finds himself in 1973. He already has an identity there, as Sam Tyler, newly transferred to the Manchester police department from Hyde, so everyone has been expecting him. His boss, Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) is this overbearing, do-it-yourself type of guy who doesn't let the law stand in the way of capturing criminals. In other words, the two guys are opposites. They are constantly butting heads and it's very entertaining.
The only person he confided to that he's from the 21st Century is co-policeman Annie Cartwright (Liz White), who simply thinks he has amnesia about his previous life. Sam also hears "voices" from his present, which are sometimes cryptic and sometimes directly at him--and more often than not come through the old television set in his tiny apartment.
The crux of the show is whether or not he's in a coma and this is all a
figment of his mind or if he's really in a coma AND really back in time. .
LIFE ON MARS is very low key for a time-travel show and that works it its advantage.
