Begins with the Frog Brothers, five years ago, in Washington. They interrupt a crippled, denture-wearing Senator from becoming a vampire, only one of the brothers gets bitten and flees. Now, in the present, Edgar Frog is being evicted from his trailer. He goes and sells some comics, then is approached by a woman who wants to hire him to find her brother. This is Gwen Lieber, who writes "TWILIGHT"-like vampire romance novels. Her brother, Peter, disappeared at a Rave two weeks ago because of a new drug called "The Thirst", which is made from vampire blood. Edgar agrees to work for her but by this time she has also hired someone else, Lars, a reality tv adventurer. Also on board is a girl, Zoe, who is interested in Edgar. She works at that comic shop. Edgar learns that the vampires are going to sacrifice Peter during a "Blood Moon" and create lots of other vampires.
At first this movie was irritating me, as I've always thought the Frog Brothers the weakest aspect of the original LOST BOYS movie. They were side characters and goofy. There's also an inconsistency with the vampires. LOST BOYS, along with the original FRIGHT NIGHT, had vampires that changed their faces when they changed, something that was later adopted by BUFFY THE VAMPIRE series. Here, they look normal and have regular vampire fangs. But when they "Vamp" out they get all these pointy teeth like the vampires in the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT movies. However, the last half hour of this flick started winning me over, especially the "twist" at the end which was obvious but I didn't see coming. And some of the references are a hoot, like the whole "You don't want to end up lonely like Neville" bit and the hint that one of the vampire hunting gang may be another type of supernatural creature.
THE THIRST is what the first LOST BOYS sequel should have been rather than trying to mimic the original on a low budget. Now, I can see this being a viable direct-to-DVD franchise. Better yet, a television series...
