On a remote island near Asia a prehistoric looking human-like skull is dug up by a woman archeologist. One of the other members of the group texts a message to the Catholic Church and they dispatch a hitman priest (Lance Henriksen) to take care of the matter. The church wants to keep the true story of human evolution a secret. So he and an armed group of soldiers capture her but she refuses to talk. So he shoots her in the head.
Then, we go to a group of young business people who are sailing their boat to an important meeting. They rescue a guy floating on some debris and it turns out to be one of the soldiers. He's hysterical and ends up crashing the boat when he wakes up that night. They all end up on that same island and are picked off one by one by the native inhabitants. But these aren't your typical cavemen. It's explained, in a recorded videotape they find of the woman archeologist, that these creatures are the mutation from apes that had then evolved into modern humans.
This is a very cool movie. In the beginning we only get glimpses of the creatures but when they are fully revealed it's not a disappointment. The makeup effects are great, along the lines of THE DESCENT, as is the whole tone of the movie, down to the woman survivor. Don't let the somewhat generic title put you off--this is one of the better horror movies of 2010.
