Before he became Hannibal the Cannibal or Sir, Anthony Hopkins played in this super-creepy tale of a ventriloquist/magician that is slowly losing touch with reality and his grips on his own mind and sanity. I can't tell you how scary or weird this movie is to be basically bloodless and tame. Just goes to show you, gore does not a horror film make always. Watching Corky slowly lose control to the dummy alter ego of Fats is both sad and scary. There are only two murders in Magic, but both are perfectly scary and disturbing. Ann-Margret's bedroom romp scene and flash of tit are also a damn fine highlight as she was still looking very sexy back in those days...mmmm.... very sexy! What was I saying? Oh yeah Magic, it's a damn scary as hell movie. Corky murders under the guidance of that dummy, and the scenes of the two communicating really are unsettling. You can say that about this whole movie. Maybe Hopkins showed a taste of what was to come with his later roles as psychopaths here, but Magic just has that weird feel and makes you feel sad watching this guy's mind decline, slipping into being controlled by a dummy. It's moody, eerie, and creepy, you'll be surprised at how easily this film gets to you. Guess that's why it was called Magic.
