Randy Quaid is sent on a business trip to Ireland to scout the location of a new resort for rich American people. He's staying in this small cottage in the country and soon finds out he's living with a family of Leprechauns. He saves the father's (Colm Meaney of DEEP SPACE NINE) life and the little people are indebted to him. While Quaid wanders the countryside, meeting quirky Irish townsfolk and falling in love with the local beauty there's also a parallel story of the war between the Fairies and the Leprechauns. When the son of the Leprechaun falls in love with the princess of the Fairies a war inadvertently starts, which escalates to full blown battles. The Queen of the Banshees (Whoopi Goldberg, slightly miscast) warns them that if they fight they'll lose their immortality. They fight anyways. In the end the two lovebirds pull a Romeo and Juliet, with everyone believing they killed themselves in order to stop the war. It does-and with the help of the Queen of the Banshees everyone who died is brought back -and everyone, including Quaid and his new love, live happily ever after. The effects wit the Leprechauns are cool, making them seem that they are only a foot tall. The Fairies, on the otherhand, look a little weird with these stubby insect wings. All in all, if you enjoyed the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy you should enjoy this. It's much lighter and more towards the Disney side of things but much better than you'd think it would be.
