In a small French town a group of city council members are having a meeting at the local castle when a strange disaster strikes. There's a loud noise, then intense heat. They take cover in the thick-walled wine cellar-and when they finally emerge to go outside see that everything is burned and destroyed. They venture out and find a young blind woman living in a cave. It rains and they fear it's radioactive-but it's not. Time passes and they find honey and their cattle reproduce and are able to grow crops. And they encounter another group that lives in a train tunnel. The problem with them is that they're a bit more ruthless...
But Malevil endures and the people are able to establish a viable community. Then, once it seems like they are all set with survival the helicopters and the "Authorities" come to take them away to safety. They announce that all the destroyed nations' territories will be used for military experiments. As the majority of the villagers leave in the helicopters they see horses running wild across the landscape. Unbeknownst to the military a few people stayed behind and travel on a raft down river, probably for a better life.
MALEVIL is an excellent end of the world movie, along the lines of SURVIVORS. Recommended.
