From Anchor Bay video comes an extremely slow moving, surprisingly non-involving serial killer movie that's trying far too hard to be HALLOWEEN. But, hey, that movie has already been done to death so what were the filmmakers thinking? As with the (superior) movie, DEAD BIRDS, this starts off with a bank robbery and the robbers taking revenge in an old abandoned farmhouse. They get there in two groups. The first robber at the house has kidnapped a woman and her young daughter who were in the car he stole to get there. He's killed by a mysterious stranger, who then puts on the mask/pillow case he was wearing over his head, so that the woman now thinks that he's the robber.Hours later the other group arrives. They were delayed because one of them was shot and had died-so they had to bury the body. This consists of a man who was more or less coerced by his girlfriend to participate in the robber. She's unlikable and so gets what's coming to her.The rest of the movie is basically the surviving robber and the kidnapped woman trying to escape from the masked killer and find her daughter. Of course, we know who the killer is going to ultimately be, thanks to a brief prologue at the beginning about a six-year-old boy being mysteriously kidnapped in the 1980's. But just when you think the movie is over it GOES ON for another fifteen minutes with the police investigating the crime scene and (needlessly) giving the back story as to what was going on. I think the movie was trying to be like ED GEIN or TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.If you've been living in a closet and have never seen a masked serial killer movie before, you might think MALEVOLENCE is okay.
