When I was watching this newest incarnation of Superman, I couldn't help but think of the first Richard Donner Superman movie, with Christopher Reeve. That movie's tag-line was "You will believe a man can fly" and there was a sense of wonderment about this Kryptonian and his powers. Here, it's "You will believe a superhero can whine".
While MAN OF STEEL started off strong, with a scene of Kal El's parents on Krypton and a showdown with Supe's father with the evil General Zodd (Michael Shannon of BUG), the rest of it is far too morose and has the emotional resonance of a TRANSFORMERS movie. It also makes two huge no-no's for Superman. First, there is no chemistry whatsoever between Superman and Lois Lane (Amy Adams). Second, Superman never kills anyone--yet he does just that and doesn't seem too broken up about it. Personally, I enjoyed the two hour finale of the television show SMALLVILLE far better than this, as it captured the "feel" of Superman far better than MAN OF STEEL.
