Miguel (pronounced Mig-oo-el) has an unusual hobby--he collects food.. The film opens with him freaking out in excitement in a grocery store when he finds a new "collectable". Then, the story goes to his home, which is covered in packages and boxes of former edibles. I say former because he can no longer eat them once they are part of his collection. In fact, he's about to fix something for dinner when he's interrupted by a phone call from his overbearing and needy mother. She soon shows up at his doorstep and insists they go out to eat at her favorite restaurant. Their date is cut short when he spies an old canned good on display and proceeds to climb over a dining family that's sitting in the booth in front of it. Things quickly get weirder, especially when we find out what Miguel prefers to have for a meal. He even goes to an "Addict's Support Group" but that goes horribly horribly awry. Let's just say things don't go well for the other members when he divulges too much information.
There are also some weird neighbors that make him almost seem normal. Almost. One is covered in green goo and insists he shot an alien the night before and has mounted it over his fireplace. And a father and son redneck who live in a camper. One day they invite him out deer hunting but really want to re-enact "The Most Dangerous Game"
THE MAN WHO COLLECTED FOOD is an extremely quirky, funny, unpredictable and original independent horror movie that more than makes up for all the lame genre flicks Hollywood crapped out this year. It is highly recommended.
