Man with the Screaming Brain (2005)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger
10.10.05

Man with the Screaming Brain (2005) This is one of those movies that I truly expected to hate, not just because it's a Bruce Campbell movie (bad experience with Bruce at a convention years ago). Yet, as I watched this movie I found that I wasn't tempted to use the fast forward button. The story is about an American Businessman (Campbell) who goes to Bulgaria to invest his millions and get a 4th quarter tax write off. He takes his wife, this blonde who seems to be in the marriage for the money. When they arrive at the airport they get a taxi driver who speaks English and knows his way around town. As they drive through 'Gypsy Town' they're stopped by two cars of potential robbers-and the cab driver beats them up and proceeds with the drive. The wife is impressed-and we know she'll soon have a tryst with the guy. It turns out that he used to be a member of the KGB.In another story, Stacy Keach Keach (previously seen with Bruce Campbell in ICEBREAKER) as a mad Russian scientist who has produced a serum that allows for a combination of different DNA, which would make all sorts of transplants possible. He hears from his assistant (Ted Raimi, goofy as usual) that Campbell is in town and tries to get his interest. It doesn't work. When Campbell gets his brain bashed in by a crazy Gypsy woman (who was also the former flame of the cab driver) and the cab driver gets shot by her, in the same scene, the scientist acquires their bodies and does a transplant. Campbell is missing a section of his brain, so the doctor replaces that with a section of the cab driver's. Oh, the guy's wife is also killed by that woman and her brain is put into a robot body...The result is that when the millionaire awakens he can hear the thoughts of his brain donor. He escapes and wanders around-and eventually has a confrontation with the insane Gypsy woman and his now robot wife. The movie shows that Campbell can write and direct better than some of the movies he's been in-and it gives him (probably) one of his last chances to show his 'Three Stooges' comedic talent. After all, he is no spring chicken.MAIN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN is more entertaining than ARMY OF DARKNESS (Perhaps one of the most unsatisfying sequels ever made). Then again, what isn't.
