In the pilot for the seven season series, we're introduced to Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette), a mother of three who is going to law school and doing an internship under the Phoenix District Attorney, Manuel Devalos. She has a conflict with her psychic/supernatural abilities and tries to ignore them for the most part. When Devalos finds out about her unique ability and puts her to work selecting jury members, she realizes that her emotions and feelings make her too close to the cases. She has doubts she can even become a lawyer because she always knows when someone is guilty or innocent. However, she does use her ability to help solve a crime--she's finding evidence to convict a 17 year old boy of killing and abusing a six year old. She knows he did it because she gets this information from his dead sister, who had seen everything from "the otherside". This brings Allison to the attention of the Texas Rangers, namely Captain Kenneth Push (Arliss Howard), who will continue to make appearances throughout the next seven years. I hadn't seen this first episode since it premiered and I'm surprised how much it's influenced by THE SIXTH SENSE.
