Jake isn't happy working at his job in the machine shop. His ex-girlfriend is married to his boss, he can't afford a car so has to walk to work and his mother is dying of cancer.
When an older co-worker of his is fired for one of his mistakes the man gives him a monkey's paw and tells him it grants the owner three wishes. Of course he does not take this seriously but begins to believe when he wishes for a sports car--and it seems to be left for him outside a bar. He and his friend, Tony Cobb (Stephen Lang of SCANNERS, AVATAR) go for a spin--and get in an accident. Tony is thrown through the windshield and killed. Jake, in a daze, walks away from the crash an wishes for him to come back to life. He does, as a soulless killer. This is an interesting version of the Monkey's Paw story but it drags on far too long--and I kept on wondering why Jake didn't simply use the third wish to make killer Tony go away, which made it all a little silly.
