As with such animated movies as SHREK, MONSTER HOUSE works on two levels, one for adults, one for the kids. In fact, I think this film would probably scare the crap out of a five-year-old.
The premise is that a crazy old man lives in the neighborhood's creepy old house. Anytime someone loses a basketball or toy he comes out and takes it back into his house. Then, one day he has a stroke and is taken to the hospital, which allows a trio of friends to go in there and investigate. They quickly find out that the house is "alive", possessed by the spirit of the old man's wife. Although I've seen this premise of a "living house" that consumes people in one of Marvel Comics' old horror titles, it's the first time I've seen it done in a movie.
MONSTER HOUSE is a scary, entertaining horror movie.
