The first 12 episodes of this series is disappointing. I am a fan of FOREVER KNIGHT and ANGEL, so when this new vampire detective show came along I WANTED to like it. I really did.
Mick St. John is a L.A. detective who is also a 90 year old vampire. He decides to use his abilities to help people who need help. His best friend, a six-hundred year-old vampire, disagrees with his lifestyle, but humors him nonetheless. In the first episode, we are told what can kill and affect a vampire. They can go out in daylight but it makes them weaker the longer they are exposed to it. A stake through the heart paralyzes them, doesn't kill them. And religious objects don't deter them at all.
The series starts to get interesting with the introduction of a woman photographer who is a dead ringer for Mick's ex-wife. She was a vampire and had turned him and he ended up killing her in fire. Or so he thought. Yet this doppelganger is human and as far as any of the other vampires know there's no cure for vampirism. But it turns out to be his ex-wife, which causes complications for him in his present life. Shannyn Sossaman is great as this vampire and it's almost worth watching for her alone.
The biggest problem is that he's not the brightest vampire you'd think that in the past fifty years of his unlife he'd learn to protect himself better, yet he almost gets killed in the first few episodes. He also doesn't cover his tracks very well. The worst problem, though, is that all the other characters, including the female love-interest reporter (Sophie Myles), are more interesting than he is. It is a lackluster, predictable series which is way too familiar.
