The International crew of the spaceship Conestoga are on their five-month journey back to Earth after landing on Mars. About a week away from Earth, one of the crew is murdered.. When they do an autopsy on the Russian woman they discover that she was strangled-and two months pregnant. Who murdered her? And who is the father of the child? The Canadian scientist is having an affair with the Italian crewman and the uptight German guy, who hits on all the women, is really doing it to disguise the fact that he is gay and having an affair with the pilot.Michael Ironside is the captain hated by the other Russian crewmember. Fifteen years ago he used to have relations with the murdered woman, though he tries to keep that fact to himself. Then, another crewmember is killed...and another. The mystery is trying to figure out who is doing what and why, as it may be more than one person doing the killings. Wilfred Brimley is great as the commander of Mission control, as is Martin Balsam (PSYCHO) as the Russian liazon. Arthur Hill (ANDROMEDA STRAIN) is the vice-President.If I'm not mistaken, I believe all of the footage of the Conestoga spaceship is stock footage taken from Roger Corman's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, which has since been cannibalized to death.MURDER IN SPACE is entertaining, not because it's a good science fiction film or mystery-but because it's a prime example of the type of soap opera that came out of the 80's, complete with weird hair and clothes. A better name would be DYNASTY IN SPACE.
