My Stepdad Is A Freakin' Vampire (2010)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger
06.11.10

My Stepdad Is A Freakin' Vampire (2010) Very well produced vampire film from first time feature director Dave Matheny. I tell you, I see dozens of independent films a year and the majority look as if they were shot with existing light with improvised locations and little forethought, so it's a plus to see that, for once, care was taken in making this movie. It's well scripted, it has good locations, it's well-shot and yes, they actually had lights and knew how to use them. And special effects? Plenty of stakings, bat-people and creepy zombies.

It begins with high-schooler Rusty having another altercation with his stepfather, who he thinks is an asshole. His mother goes away for a few days, leaving the two of them alone and this is when Rusty finds the dead body stashed away in the attic. It's of Chuck, a missing postal worker. Rusty calls the police but when they get there the only thing they find is a dead rat. And the policeman is the father of Rusty's best friend, Travis. Then, Rusty gets a note at school that indicates someone else believes him about this stepdad being a murderer. So he goes to the designated meeting location with Travis and they find out the note was written by Gert, the school's janitor. They think the guy is crazy, until Chuck shows up, now a vampire. Gert has been after the stepdad for years, since he killed his family.

Rusty finds out that his stepfather is after a key which will unlock the key to "the other side", where all the other vampires have been banished. The guy had been their leader and had escaped, then spending hundreds of years looking for a comeback. The teenagers realize that the key is buried with Rusty's dead father, so they have to dig him up and retrieve it. Only the vampire stepdad gets there first and unlocks the door, releasing these cool looking bat creatures. Of course, this all happens on Halloween and there's some humorous scenes in which the boys have to hunt down the creatures, running them over in their van.

This is a very entertaining movie, along the lines of FRIGHT NIGHT, LOST BOYS and MY MOTHER IS A WEREWOLF.
