This Hallmark Tv adaptation of the Jules Verne novel, while more faithful to the book, is not as engaging as the Ray Harryhausen effects movie from the 1960's.A group of Civil War prisoners manage to steal a hot air balloon and end up on a tropical island where the animal life has grown to gigantic proportions. There are giant scorpions, snakes and lizards. Also on the island is the infamous Captain Nemo (Patrick Stewart), who has been working on a weapon to end all wars. He reasons that once people see what horrible destruction will happen, that they'll avoid war at all costs. The leader of the Civil War refugees thinks he's bonkers and wants no part in helping him. So Nemo casts out his new guests, who have to somehow survive all the huge animals trying to eat them. They find refuge in a cliffside cave and hole out there until another enemy arrives--- pirates. This movie is entertaining enough, if not a little too long, and Stewart gives a good performance as Nemo.
