This six-part BBC Produced television series is created by Neil Gaiman, who is probably best known for scripting the 70+ issue run of DC Comic's THE SANDMAN.Richard Mayhew is a typical working stiff with a typically average life. One night, on the way to the theatre with his stuck-up girlfriend, he goes to help what appears to be a homeless girl, who has been injured. The girlfriend tells him that if he stays and helps that she'll call off their engagement. He chooses to help the girl, whose name is Door.It turns out Door is a queen, of sorts, of London Below, which is this darker world that exists within London, comprised of the homeless and forgotten people. The supernatural also exists here, from Succubi to talking rats to evil Angels. When Mayhew helps her and acknowledges her existence, his role in his world starts to disappear. He goes to stop a cab and no cab stops. He goes to work and no one sees him. His apartment is even being re-rented, the landlord saying that the previous occupant has disappeared. So he ends up going to London Below with Door and her companions, who are the mysterious Marquis and an Amazonian Bodyguard. Her quest is to find out the person responsible for having her family slain. But after them are two supernatural hitmen, who are more or less comic ghouls. They go through many adventures and many strange places, as it's Door's talent to open up doors to different places, where there are no doors. They eventually seek out an Angel, who may be able to help her...or not.Although this was shot in video (as any things are in the UK) the story and characters are engaging enough so you don't mind this budgetary constraint. And it's such a great idea for a series. If you're a fan of Gaiman's SANDMAN then you'll definitely enjoy this, as it has a similar wry tone.Available from A & E Home Video here in the States.
