Gene Watson (Johnny Depp) is blackmailed by Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) to try to assassinate a governor (Marsha Mason) who is making a speech at a hotel. Walken is holding his young daughter hostage and tells him that she'll be killed if he doesn't complete his mission within an hour. The movie then proceeds in real time, which works quite well.
