This variation on 'PLAY MISTY FOR ME' casts Tracy Nelson as an insane fan/listener of a radio psychologist (Shanna Reed). One day she gets up enough nerve to call into her live radio show. She confesses of how lonely she is, that she has no time for herself between working at the convenience store and taking care of her overbearing, invalid mother. Dr. Lindsey, the psychologist, tells her that she must make changes and make friends. She takes this to mean that her best friend is going to be that doctor-so she finds ways to infiltrate her life. First, she follows her in her car to her house, then gets a job at an answering service she belongs to. Soon after she gets to talk to her in person she ends up as a last-minute babysitter. Once in her house, goes through her diary and wears her clothes. She has it in her mind that she wants to be Lindsey's best friend and will go to great lengths.Another thing she does, which sets her off on a killing spree, is to let her mean-spirited mother die. After this the killing comes easy. In THE NIGHT CALLER the body count is surprisingly high and Tracy Nelson does a great job as the disturbed, obsessed woman.
