This movie is along the lines of other 70's End-of-the-World movies, like SOYLENT GREEN and OMEGA MAN. It concerns a family in England, where it's on the news that a virus is spreading, killing grass crops around the world, particularly China. In a scene which takes place in an upscale restaurant a woman declares to her husband that "The Chinese use shit to fertilize their crops, that's why this is happening", and he replies "I should sell you to them-I'd make a fortune!". In truth, the blight is caused by pesticides and fertlizers.
A man, along with his wife, daughter and the daughter's boyfriend, decide to leave London once they find out that the authorities plan to euthanize the city with a nerve toxin in order so that the population out in the country can survive. Their plan is to head to his brothers estate in the country. It's a long, arduous journey, particularly when they have to trek on foot. And horrible things happen such as when his wife and daughter are raped, What stood out most to me is that there's also an evil motorcycle gang scene that undeniably influenced the motor cycle scene in Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD. The theme song, by Roger Whitaker, is terrible, but the movie is great, along the lines of the original UK SURVIVORS series. Directed by Cornel Wilde.
Someone really needs to remake this movie in a modern setting-the script would not have to be changed at all!
