Ogroff: The Mad Mutilator (1983)
Movie Review by The Spastic Cannibal

Ogroff: The Mad Mutilator (1983) Finally got hold of this obscure little french backwoods slasher flick and, while it delivered on the low-quality Super-8 "schlock" I had initially expected, I ended up largely disappointed. The first half of "Ogroff" was actually pretty fun and surprisingly gruesome stuff - about a cannibal hermit who collects human limbs to feed to a mob of zombies he is hording in his cellar. Within the first two minutes of the film, he is mutilating a family - which included the beheading and dismemberment of a small child - and he then proceeds to slaughter a group of hippies who are, for some unexplained reason, playing chess out in the woods. There is then a overly long, though still cool, chainsaw duel before Ogroff ends up kidnapping some broad who seems willing to have sex with him for some reason before the zombies escape and more begin sprouting from graves... I'm not entirely sure what happened but the movie gets so jumbled and retarded that it nearly becomes unwatchable. It was even more aggravating since "Ogroff" sucked hard even BEFORE that, but at least I was able to derive some mindless entertainment from it. The last twenty minutes just fucking drag!

The budget for this thing - I would estimate at somewhere around $5 and unlimited access to the dumpster behind the local butcher's shop. The effects are BAD but not nearly as bad as the editing. The film looks like it was cut with Ogroff's axe! It's all over the place and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, throughout. The audio is completely unable to overlap anything else so we have electronic music - ominous drone - electronic music - UFO noises - electronic music. Thankfully, there's hardly any dialog so they had plenty of room for their unsynchronized dubbing and recycled scream techniques... As you could guess, those who can't handle horribly shoddy film making won't last five minutes of "Ogroff"...

If only the movie would have been cut a little shorter and just kept out the zombie-ending I would have rated it higher since they had the 'body count' rising briskly and the killer's stupid grunting and axe-masturbation was funny, but it just got too incoherent and LONG at around the half-way mark...
