Tom Penderel (Tom Poston) is an American car salesman in England. He's sharing an apartment with an eccentric millionaire named Roderick. He has the apartment during the nights and the other guy during the days. Roderick has recently purchased a car and wants Tom to deliver it to his ancestral home out in the country. He does this, during a rainstorm, and when he gets there is locked out by an iron gate. He bangs on it and a stone carving falls on the hood of the car, totaling it. He manages to get in and when he knocks on the front door falls through a trap door on the front porch.
Roderick isn't the only one living in the house--all his relatives live there as well. They are a weird bunch. An uncle is building an ark and is accumulating animals to put aboard it. His mother endlessly knits to pass the time and his brother collects guns.
There's a stipulation in his father's will that everyone in the family must live there or else they'll be written out of the will. They must all be present by twelve-midnight or else!
Tom gets dragged into this when people start being murdered because he resembles a painting of one of their ancestors. They think he may be after the money. He simply wants to leave. And, of course, the killer turns out to be the least likely person.
THE OLD DARK HOUSE is an entertaining, dark and morbid comedy. Recommended.
