I put off seeing this movie for two decades, thinking it just another JAWS ripoff--and while I'm sure its making was very much inspired by the shark movie, it is a very different film, more akin to FRANKENSTEIN than anything else. Richard Harris (A MAN CALLED HORSE) portrays a fisherman who accidently kills the giant whale's pregnant male while trying to capture her--and the Orca seeks revenge. Orca smashes boats, collapses seaside buildings and even manages to cause the near destruction of a town by fire, challenging Harris to come out to the sea to fight him. With most of his friends killed, Harris realizes that the only choice he has is to face this monster of rage he created. Years before his own pregnant wife was killed by a drunk driver--yet he did nothing for revenge--and thinks that the whale cared more for his mate than he did. Guilty and despondent by his own choices in life, he lets the whale lead him to the arctic circle where they are able to face each other, killer to killer. As soon as Harris is killed, the revenge accomplished, the anger leaves the Orca, who swims off into the distance. Both got what the wanted.
