This supernatural thriller is completely different than I thought it would be, judging from the previews. Rather than being another movie dealing with the Devil, it instead tackles the politics and good vs. evil going on within the Catholic Church itself. One faction wants to destroy 'the Soul Eater', a man who is able to consume the sins from another and allow them to go to heaven. Another wants to preserve this being. One priest (Heath Ledger of A KNIGHT'S TALE) starts investigating the suicide death of his mentor, an old man who had made a deal with this Soul Eater. This is complicated by the appearance of a young woman (Shannyn Sosamon, also of A KNIGHT'S TALE) who is in love with him. He had performed a successful exorcism on her a year before. There are some disturbing moments, such as with these demons in the guise of young children, a decadent underground adult playground and scenes with 'The Black Pope'. Best of all, this movie is far better than you'd think it would be.
