I had no expectations when I put this in the dvd player but by the end credits I really liked this movie...except for one thing: the digital special effects. These include CGI gunshots to the head, which looks cartoonish, a fake helicopter and some weird radar images.
However, the makeup effects are great, as you would expect from Bob Kurtzman. In fact, the effects of the tendrils shooting about is creepy, far more effective than the vines in THE RUINS. If you were disappointed by that Hollywood movie then you should definitely rent this out-- it more than makes up for it.
As for the movie itself, it's well written and has a feeling of dread about it, like the original ANDROMEDA STRAIN. An secret experiment from the 1950's is uncovered and a weird organism is released, which is related to a biology teacher from New Jersey (Johnathon Schaech). It's up to him and a female soldier to stop it from taking over the world.
Recommended.
