This was very first Vincent Price film I had the pleasure of viewing. Before I was introduced to his work, my knowledge of his films and of his life were limited to only Michael Jackson's Thriller, commercials in the 80's, and the brief role he played in 1990's Edward Scissorhands. Although this feature is loosely based on the Poe short story written in 1842, it offers an air of creativity that captivates the viewer. This is also the first film that I experienced the famous low-budget horror actress Barbara Steele, who played a notable role in the cult feature La maschera del demonio (1960), commonly known as Black Sunday or The Mask of Satan. She also went on to star in other underground titles, such as 1965's Nightmare Castle, and David Cronenburg's Shivers (1975). There are several releases of The Pit and the Pendulum - the 1991 version starring Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, From Beyond) and Lance Henrikson, the 1913 silent film, and the latest 2009 release.
