This PG-13 Japanese animated feature isn't a kiddie movie, having more in common with CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON than it does POKEMON. In ancient times the forests were ruled by huge animal gods and humans are trying to take over their lands for their own purposes. After a warrior kills a monstrous boar his hand becomes infected with the same demon which possessed the boar-and soon his limb starts having a mind of its own. In search of a cure, he travels across the land and comes to a town where the humans are mining iron for weapons. The woman who runs the place is rather ruthless and she's determined to kill the wolves that live nearby. Living with the wolves is Princess Mononoke, who behaves feral and rides the huge lupines. She's determined to prevent humans from destroying the forests and repeatedly says how much she hates humans. She and the warrior become friends-and in the end have to defeat the angry, infected spirit of the forest before it kills everyone. There are lots of limbs flying and blood spurting in this movie. The only thing I thought rather distracting were the dubbed in voices of Billy Bob Thornton, Minny Driver, Claire Danes and Jada Pinkett Smith, as there wasn't any need to use Hollywood actors to dub the character's voices.
