The Netflix series takes place after the events of DAREDEVIL Season Two. And if you're expecting more the same same action and insanity from that storyline you're going to be in for a surprise. After the Punisher takes care of those responsible for the death of his wife and kids he goes off the grid, slinging a sledge hammer for a construction company in New York City. It's much more of a way for him to vent his frustration than make an income. Plus, everyone thinks he's dead. Of course, something happens at his work site and he ends up rescuing a co-worker-and getting in the news. He's contacted by a guy named Micro, who is also hiding from the police. Micro has a videotape of something horrible the Punisher did when he was a soldier in the Middle East-a small part of something being done clandestinely by a secret organization within the government run by a sinister guy named Rawlins (Paul Schulze of NURSE JACKIE). The two completely different guys team up and attempt to go after him. It's not easy and there's lots of carnage.
Here you get great character development and a psychological profile of one of Marvel Comic's fringe characters-and a buddy movie, to boot. I've never been a fan of Jon Bernthal as he irritated the crap out of me on THE WALKING DEAD but this won me over. He does have range. However, the best portrayal of the PUNISHER goes to Ray Stevenson in PUNISHER: WAR ZONE. On one hand I like that the series goes in a completely different direction than you expect and makes him more human and relatable-but on the other hand is lacking the intensity of DAREDEVIL. I think it will be very interesting to see where they take the character when he reappears in the next Netflix series.
