Richard Benjamin is Adam Quark, who captains a garbage collection ship. On board are a strange assortment of crewmembers, which include the Betties (one of them is a clone of the other), the transmute Gene/Jean (Tim Thomerson), the square headed robot Andy and Ficus, a humanoid plant.
The first episode, created and written by Buck Henry, is the funniest and features an old crotchety scientist with an eye-patch instead of Ficus. This guy is credited for creating Andy the Android, though in later episodes it's mentioned a few times that Adam Quark created him.
In the eight episodes the crew gets into various adventures which allude to other movies/shows, such as when Quark tries to feed an innocent looking pet that turns out to be a danger (like in Carpenter's DARK STAR) and when he uses "The Source" (STAR WARS) or when he goes to rescue people on the Planet Palumbus, entitled "Goodbye Palumbus" (a play on the Richard Benjamin movie "Goodbye Columbus").
The two most entertaining characters, who have the best one-liners, are Ficus (Richard Kelton) and Andy. They are hilarious.
