A four-person space crew is on Planet X, a newly discovered planet in an elliptical orbit in our solar system. The astronauts are running through the ruins of an ancient civilization, pursued by giant rats. They are all torn apart except for one woman, who makes it aboard her ship and is able to fly away. However, the rat she killed on board was pregnant and dozens of baby rats (the size of normal rats) attack her. The ship crash-lands but she somehow survives. In fact, she is infested with the creatures, which uses her body as a means of travel. There are a few really weird scenes in which her head splits open and we see a rat sitting where her brain should be.
She spreads the contagion and soon there are giant rats on Earth. Her boyfriend, who can't believe she is dead, eventually reunites with her, though he's not much help.
For this being a relatively low-budget movie I was impressed with the special effects, from the giant rats to the spaceships and all the miniature sets. It's all very cool and worth checking out for that alone. If you've enjoyed movies like THE FOOD OF THE GODS or DEADLY EYES, you'll definitely like this rodent infested movie and not think it overly cheesy.
