At a train station in London people are disappearing and it has something to do with a cave-in that happened over a hundred years before. The trapped people survived and reproduced. Now, the last of their descendants, a cannibalistic man who looks like one of the family from THE HILLS HAVE EYES is in search of a new mate since his recent one died down in the tunnels. He kidnaps a young hippie chick and her boyfriend goes to the police about her disappearance--and then goes in search of her himself when they don't believe him.
This is surprisingly creepy and gory and features one of the best roles I've ever seen Donald Pleasence (HALLOWEEN) in, as the police inspector investigating the case. He is quirky and hilarious. It's also interesting that the cannibal man is depicted as sympathetic. You actually feel sorry for the guy for being the last of his line.
I put this UK movie up there with the original HILLS HAVE EYES (1977) and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974). This earlier film definitely had an influence on those two horror classics.
