In the pilot episode, directed by Kevin Smith, we're introduced to protagonist Sam, who works at The Work Bench, a Home Depot type store. His friends there are Sock (Tyler Labine) and Ben. There's also a girl, Andy (Missy Peregrym of HEROES), who h's had a crush on the past ew years and she is obviously into him. But it's his 21st birthday and lots of weirdness happens. He moves objects with his hands without touching them and a pack of dogs follows him to work. Then, The Devil appears in the back seat of his car. This is all explained by his parents when he finally returns home (yes, he's still living at home). Before he was born his father was fatally sick and they made a deal with The Devil to give him their first born on his 21st birthday. And now that time has come. but rather than taking his oul to Hell Lucifer wants him to be Hell's bounty hunter, returning escaped souls to the netherworld. The first one he has to capture is a fireman from the 50's who now creates fires and is burning buildings around town. The special effects are impressive. My favorite aspect of the entire episode is the portrayal of Satan by actor Ray Wise (TWIN PEAKS).
I found the majority of the series' episodes better than this one--and I'm a big fan of the show.
