Hillary Swank portrays Katherine, a university professor in Lousiana who disproves miracles. She was an ordained minister, but stopped believing in God five years ago when her husband and daughter were killed in Africa, by the people she was trying to help. A fellow minister calls her with a warning that she's in danger, as he's given signs that something is going to happen to her.
After one of her lectures she's approached by a small town science teacher who says his town needs her help. A boy mysteriously died and the nearby river has turned blood red. What convinces her to go is that he says that the town blames all this on a twelve-year-old girl - and they may do something to her. She goes to the town with an associate and it seems that the river is indeed made of human blood, the fish and frogs are dying and the other biblical 'Twelve Plagues' begin to happen. Is the girl responsible? Is she the devil's child?
This is a really good, OMEN type movie, along the lines of THE SECRET OF HARVEST HOME, THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER and SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, with an A-list cast and a satisfying ending. It is one of the better horror films of the year.
