This is a very slow moving movie, but by the time you get to the end you realize why the director chose to do it. It does work. Shot in 16mm, it actually looks fuzzier and cheaper than something shot on digital video, which was probably not the intention. What this does, though, is make it seem as if this is a movie shot in the 1970's - one those government doing clandestine deadly experiments on the American populace. The premise is that someone is doing sound-wave experiments on a small Indiana town, which makes people go crazy and kill themselves. We're given no explanation, other than in some voice-overs, but that's okay. It lends to the unease of the situation. The special makeup effects at the end, particularly the guy getting his head caved in by a forklift, are gruesome and realistic. RETURN IN RED is Worth checking out.
