Hideo Nakata directed this stylish Japanese film based on the novel by Koji Suzuki and created a dark, genuinely creepy film. A series of teen deaths linked to a mysterious videotape turns from urban legend material to reality for reporter Reiko. After she ends up finding and watching the tape, she gets that dreaded call, letting her know she has 7 days to live. Reiko's life spirals, trying to find out the what's going on and how to stop the curse, which soon has ensnared her son and his father as well. Slowly, she unravels the tangled web behind the accursed tape, but not exactly how to save them all. The strange background behind the video makes for the creepy sub-plot fueling Ring. The whole premise here is done with an eeriness that not even the very good U.S. remake could grasp. This subliminal movie works on so many levels, but it's that powerful ending that really delivers the goods. The end of Ring has to be one of horror's scariest moments in recent memory. Reiko more or less accidentally figures out how to elude the curse, but that doesn't really alter it. Many more will watch the tape and hear the Ring. Don't let the fact that this is a Japanese film fool you, it's more than worth viewing and owning, just read the damn subtitles and quit bitchin'. Watch this powerful ghosty type story in the dark for added fun and you'll feel all of Nakata's dark atmosphere in this movie. The remake doesn't quite capture the feel, darkness, or mood of the original. You'll never watch an unknown tape or view a ringing phone the same. This is good stuff folks!
