This adaptation of the Phillip Jose Farmer book TO YOUR SCATTERED BODIES GO was just okay. The premise is that anyone who ever lived is reborn, in a younger body, on this planet called RIVER WORLD. The river is surrounded by extremely steep cliffs, so no one can wander too far from the water. In the opening sequence an astronaut dies in a shuttle accident, then finds himself awakening inside this womb-like bubble which bursts. He swims ashore and soon encounters dozens of other people emerging from the river, all from different time periods. One woman died when she was in her 80's, another died in a concentration camp, et cetera. They are soon captured by a barbarian tyrant, who wants to enslave them, and they escape with the help of a mysterious being, who may be one of the planet's native inhabitants. There's also a lone alien among all the humans, an alien who plays a key role later on in the story. Eventually the astronaut escapes with his friends and encounter a friendlier group of people, who are busy building a fusion powered steamboat. The leader, Sam, is friendly enough but he hides a secret-that he's really Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). The ending is totally open (there are five books) and I suspect there will be another episode on the Sci-Fi Channel soon.
