For fans of the whole Japanese Cyber-Punk genre, "Rubber's Lover" is a film not to pass on. Personally, I have never been very much 'into' these types of films, but when the mood strikes they can be fairly entertaining 'mind-fucks'...
In a typically confusing and obscured context, the film follows the detrimental experiments conducted by a group of erratic scientists. Their secret, criminally funded "unit" is tampering with the effects of Ether on unfortunate captives, with the hopes of some breakthrough in the area of psychic ability. When the subsidized operation loses it's provisions and the whole project begins unraveling, the scientists begin rabidly 'tweeking' on the intense substance which includes erotic hallucinations, murder, and bizarre deformities...
"Rubber's Lover" is pure 'industrial-noir' surrealism, but ultimately forgettable. The incoherency is expected as well as constant scenes of strangeness - mainly involving each character screaming in agony - and other than a few creative visuals, the film is pretty slow-paced and dull...
