A group of college students get more than they bargained for when they travel deep in the Florida swamps. They are working on their thesis project on Native American folklore. In the opening scene we see what happened to an Indian criminal years before-- he was taken out to this chunk of land, sentenced for his crimes--and they land itself punished him. Basically, anyone with sins is punished who travels there. Unfortunately for these students they all have sins--some much bigger than others.
While this does follow the basic "horror formula" -- a group of kids go to a strange place and encounter something that kills them one by one--and has some of the typical characters--the blonde, the nerd, the plain girl, the asshole, the film presents enough twists and scares that more than make up for it.
The makeup effects are excellent and it's also extremely well shot by director Jose Zambrano Cassella. Most important of all, THE SACRED is a serious, creepy film.
I found it far better than films like HATCHET. Highly recommended.
