This TNT 4 hour adaptation of the Stephen King book was far better than I thought it would be. A good comparison would be how the movie MANHUNTER was redone as RED DRAGON. It's the same story done a completely different way.Rob Lowe is an author who returns to his home town of Jerusalem's lot to research material for his new book. As a child he had ventured into the old Marsten house and witnessed the murders of its occupants-an incident which scarred him for life. He meets a woman, who becomes a possible love interest-and encounters a great evil, which now resides in that very same house.Instead of the Nosferatu-like vampire of the first movie, the vampire Barlow is like that in the book-he looks like a man. Rutger Hauer does a good job as the vampire, radiating evil, but he's given too little screen time. His henchman, Straker, is portrayed by Donald Sutherland, and is much more unbalanced than James Mason's portrayal of the character. The funny thing is, is that both these actors were in the original BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER movie. There are some genuinely creepy moments with the various vampires crawling about on walls, like spiders. Some of them move very fast while others, particularly when the populace of the town is transformed at the end, resemble shambling zombies.Although I like the Tobe Hooper version better this is still worth checking out.
